Description
" A Break from the Storm" No 4
DETAIL: This is a close up image with brilliant highlights of color. Please note: It does look different from a distance- as - on your wall. So, possibly, stand a few feet away from it as you view it here to get the effect you might see in any number of your living spaces.
METHOD:: Textured Acrylic Impasto, Modern Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Narrative, and Digital Paintography with a Twist.
NOTE: This is one painting from the miniatures collection. Painted on a 4x4 canvas block, each miniature is multi-layered. It is sketched, painted, waxed, carved out and completed in a textured acrylic impasto presentation. The narratives invite your interpretation of inner/outer landscapes. There is a persistent focus on patterns and bold or unusual color.
ABOUT: “A Break from the Storm ” No.4 is a visual metaphor. This painting depicts a woman nearly submerged in the sea at the base of a bridge. Will she be able to overcome the storm in her world? According to ancient Roman mythology, Neptune had superhuman strength , speed, and stamina and resistance to physical injury. Surely, this universal energy can provide a safe harbor – a “Break from the Storm."

“A Break from the Storm ” is an example of Modern Impressionism and New Mixed Media with references figurative abstraction. It is narrative inviting you to discover your own expression of this tale. I hope you will find a connection here - linger awhile, possibly start a conversation about the elements - spaces, lines, textures and rhythms and contemporary themes that speak to you.
“A Break from the Storm ” began as a photo of the rocky Oregon Coast. After a pen-and ink sketch, it took shape as an acrylic on canvas, later to be photographed once more. At that point it evolved into mixed media, modern contemporary (new media) paintography. When I took a photo of the final iteration and subjected it to the whims of my muse-(and computer)- here in my studio in Asheville, North Carolina the result was this digital rendering.
It continues a theme that runs through my work : Nature, metaphor, and the fraught process of selection we—each of us— face daily : The choice for awareness of “rocky shores” and the need to navigate when seas are stormy.
