" A Nap in the Grassy-Grass"

" A Nap in the Grassy-Grass" began as a photo of _the studio CAT lounging in the tall grasses outside the door. .I had to laugh when I spotted his ears (bottom left in this 9image.) After ink work was added to a pencil or ink sketch, it took shape on canvas –(acrylic)- later to be photographed once more.

At that point, it evolved into modern contemporary -(new mixed media-) paintography. When I took a photo of the canvas and subjected it to the whims of my muse-(and computer)- in my studio in Asheville, North Carolina the result was this digital rendering.


" A Nap in the Grassy-Grass" is an abstract expressionist / figurative abstraction piece. It tells a story of afternoons of relaxation, the melody of soft breezes in the field, animal delights, but most of all_ invites you to add your interpretation.

Narrative art, in mixed media – (pencil, ink, paint, photo work and textured applications) – often unfolds as a collage of color and texture. Whether on paper, canvas, or as a digital rendering, the result is “contemporary mixed media art” in celebration of nature and joie de vivre.


When you visit my website or studio in Asheville, North Carolina – you may discover that I love to tell stories- visual stories. My narrative art, in mixed media – (pencil, ink, paint, photo work and textured applications) – often unfolds as a collage. There is an emphasis on color and texture, and hidden bits to surprise the viewer. Whether on paper, canvas, or as a digital rendering - “contemporary mixed media art” -the purpose, the raison d'être is to celebrate life.

ZSANAN STUDIO NOTES:: I hope you will find a connection here - linger awhile, possibly start a conversation about the elements - spaces, lines, textures and rhythms or themes that speak to you. As we - each of us- (and also as a collection of living creatures) - face the fraught process of selection every day- may we find what is positive and possible.

SYMBOLISM:: In this paintography piece, the juxtaposition of color with changing light symbolizes positive change through envisioning creative perspectives. Here the story of longing for connection highlights an impetus for change with compassion.


METHOD:: I create visual narratives from what is around me- make sketches into canvas work, then take a photo creating a mixed media digital rendering such as what you see in this piece. I reach out for the story and metaphor via texture, patterns, repetition - a feeling of lyrical abstraction of elements offering a sense of collaboration - a collection of concepts and forms taking shape.

Look for interpretations of outer/inner landscapes with a persistent focus on patterns and bold or unusual color. Photo and digital manipulation mostly NOT an accurate interpretation, seek to explore the essence of the subject - shapes, colors, forms, textures, layering and the overall gestalt – for an effect. Expect glimpses of reality from unusual perspectives and image-making prompted by nature.
