“Downtown from Across the River”

“Downtown from Across the River” -is the sixth in a series of watercolor postcards that explore nature and urban environments. It is mixed medium (watercolor, pen-and-ink, and acrylic on high-quality paper)- image in this series of landscape artworks.

This is a now a digital rendering from my original watercolor converted here in my studio in Asheville, North Carolina. This contemporary paintography art continues the thread of interest in nature that runs through what I paint on canvas, or on paper, or in a digital way. The visual story emphasizes the fraught process of selection we—each of us-- face every day—that being the choice to look for beauty and possibility in what is around us.

Theme and Symbolism: : In this paintography piece, the juxtaposition of color with changing light symbolizes positive change through envisioning different perspectives. Here is the story of longing for connection ( the single tree, the moon beckoning) and somewhere within this tale, there is the possibility for change through compassion. Tao Saying: “ The journey is the reward.”

Story and Method: : I create from what is around me. I translate photos into mixed media often abstract expressionist digital renderings such as you see in this piece. I reach out for the story or metaphor to share in a narrative via texture, patterns, repetition that meet in the feeling of collage. Much space here, and the use of touches of bold colors and broad brush strokes. As I do in all my paintings, I seek to create a lasting visual impression with this mixed medium digital technique

This piece creates its narrative via texture, patterns, repetition, and "post-painterly-abstraction fauve-wave" bits that meet in the feeling of an integrated collection of concepts and forms... with a feeling of collage.
