Your Story of Art
THANK YOU for looking and considering my art work and images. Your time and your comments are prized! I appreciate your comments, social media support,
and visits today –(and tomorrow.). (((*:*)) .
You probably already know that elephants have a complex consciousnesses, heightened awareness, and emotions. As sentient beings, they relate to one another - and to us. As such, this series hopes to highlight an unspoken understanding about their dignity- that quality of being that is worthy of respect.
As a series, “Elephants Unspoken" features bold, figurative abstract images in distinct shapes or black and white expressions. This symbolizes polarities. The hope is that within that very darkness and light, there exists room for change with compassion. Indeed, a full array of emotions, and many new perspectives may be possible.
THE BACKSTORY: I was spurred on by a chance encounter of a photo- which was, for me, grotesque. I happened on the photo of a decapitated elephant head, trunk and all - sawed off, tusks tossed on to a pile of other tusks near by. That prompted this series.
When, in 2019, the USA lifted the ban on importing sport-hunted elephant parts as trophies, along with any number of artists, had something to say. How can we work to remedy an underworld of impulse?
RESEARCH & NOTES:
“A lot can happen in the lifetime of an elephant. Those in the wild grow up among an extended family herd of mothers, daughters, aunts, and cousins. They are led by a matriarch—the oldest and wisest female in the herd. Together, they travel many miles a day, across grasslands and savannahs. They create waterholes shared by other animal species. They play, they adapt, and they mourn. They are sentient beings with remarkable memories and social structures that mimic our own.” Elephants.com.
** "Africa loses some thirty-thousand (30,000) elephants to ivory poaching every year. An elephant is taken down on the African continent once every fifteen (15) minutes." (Pinnock, “The Last Elephants.”)
I donate 95% of the proceeds from the purchase of Elephant Note Card 10-packs to raise awareness and create change with compassion.

ZSANAN STUDIO NOTES:: I hope you will find a connection here - linger awhile, possibly start a conversation about elephants and the elements - spaces, lines, textures and rhythms or themes that speak to you. As we - each of us- (and also as a collection of living creatures) - face the fraught process of selection every day- may we find what is positive and possible.
ZSANAN STUDIO PHILOSOPHY: “NOT AN IMAGE BUT AN EXPERIENCE”--
"Perception is everything in art. The artist goal is to influence the viewer to see the world as the artist does. This can change the viewers mood, their mind, their outlook - even if only for a limited time." Lutz Baar
SYMBOLISM:: In this paintography piece, the juxtaposition of color with changing light symbolizes positive change through envisioning creative perspectives. Here the story of longing for connection highlights an impetus for change with compassion.
METHOD:: I create visual narratives from what is around me- make sketches into canvas work, then take a photo creating a mixed media digital rendering such as what you see in this piece. I reach out for the story and metaphor via texture, patterns, repetition - a feeling of lyrical abstraction of elements offering a sense of collaboration - a collection of concepts and forms taking shape.
BEHIND THE SCENES: When you visit my website or studio in Asheville, North Carolina – you may discover that I love to tell stories- visual stories, that is. My narrative art, in mixed media – (pencil, ink, paint, photo work and textured applications) – often unfolds as a collage. I delight in putting an emphasis not only on color and texture, but on - *hidden surprises! Whether on paper, canvas, or as a digital rendering --the purpose, the raison d'être -- is to celebrate life.
