Description
“Friday Harbor Regatta No. 1”
“Friday Harbor Regatta No. 1” originally was a plein air oil pastel. It was photographed on San Juan Island, Washington State, USA . Later, it became this post-painterly abstract expressionist piece at my studio in Asheville, North Carolina and part of a Friday Harbor Regatta series especially designed for mugs.
**
Symbolism: Perseverance. During my stay in Friday Harbor, Washington State, I found myself drawn- time and again- to a certain vantage point where I could see sailboats flying by – racing in the winds. Repeatedly this scene of endurance, strength and perseverance drew me in-- called to me regardless of time of day.
**
In this piece, the juxtaposition of color with changing light also symbolizes positive change –a thread of interest that runs through my work across the years- envisioning different perspectives- encouraging change with compassion.
The Story: I was on a 21 Day Retreat in the San Juan Islands a few hours and a ferry ride away from Seattle, WA. I had my oil pastels with me, but only construction paper from the local market in Friday Harbor. Getting it down in some manner is what urges me on...in fact, just doing this could be the retreat, I sought.
**
So now, here is a collection -especially created for warming your hands in a mug- once quickly sketched oil pastels now emerged from a particular spot along the water’s edge back then...

THANK YOU for looking and considering my art work and images. Your time and your comments are prized! If you like to make text suggestions, please do contact me. Again, I appreciate your comments, social media support and future visits.
A NOTE FOR BUYERS: Possibly, just the thing you are looking for is here! Most images are available in many choices of sizes and formats and are available for your own custom-framing choices -- competitively priced. Your print will be beautiful, long-lasting and guaranteed, whatever printing, matting and framing you select from FAA.
YOUR DÉCOR / LIFESTYLE: This image works well as a framed (or unframed) gallery-quality print at home or business. It is a statement piece— a soft remarkable duvet cover, a charming fabric shower curtain, a throw pillow that adds a pop of color— even a greeting card you won’t find at the grocery store. And give yourself the gift of art as a weekender tote or fun tank top. ... (((*:*)))
ZSANAN STUDIO NOTES:: I hope you will find a connection here - linger awhile, possibly start a conversation about the elements - spaces, lines, textures and rhythms or themes that speak to you. As we - each of us- (and also as a collection of living creatures) - face the fraught process of selection every day- may we find what is positive and possible.
Please do look for interpretations of outer/inner landscapes with a persistent focus on patterns and bold or unusual color. Photo and digital manipulation mostly NOT an accurate interpretation, seek to explore the essence of the subject - shapes, colors, forms, textures, layering and the overall gestalt – for an effect. Expect glimpses of reality from unusual perspectives and image-making prompted by nature.
PHILOSOPHY: “NOT AN IMAGE BUT AN EXPERIENCE”-- As we - each of us- (and as a collection of living creatures) - face the fraught process of selection every day- may we find what is positive and possible.
"Perception is everything in art. The artist goal is to influence the viewer to see the world as the artist does. This can change the viewers mood, their mind, their outlook - even if only for a limited time." Lutz Baar
SYMBOLISM:: In this paintography piece, the juxtaposition of color with changing light symbolizes positive change through envisioning creative perspectives. Here the story of longing for connection highlights an impetus for change with compassion.
METHOD:: I create visual narratives from what is around me- make sketches into canvas work, then take a photo creating a mixed media digital rendering such as what you see in this piece. I reach out for the story and metaphor via texture, patterns, repetition - a feeling of lyrical abstraction of elements offering a sense of collaboration - a collection of concepts and forms taking shape.
BEHIND THE SCENES: When you visit my website or studio in Asheville, North Carolina – you may discover that I love to tell stories- visual stories. My narrative art, in mixed media – (pencil, ink, paint, photo work and textured applications) – often unfolds as a collage. There is an emphasis on color and texture, and hidden bits to surprise the viewer. Whether on paper, canvas, or as a digital rendering - “contemporary mixed media art” -the purpose, the raison d'être is to celebrate life.
