Description
“Great Expectations” - Series No. 1
“Great Expectations “ is an original acrylic abstract expressionist landscape painted on canvas with my “Lucky Brush” and a number of palette knives. It tells a story, and asks you to apply your own interpretation... .
This visual image started on canvas, but it evolved after its photo was taken. It became paintography when that photo was subjected to my imagination and computer here in my studio in Asheville, North Carolina. Here is the digital rendering. (The original is living with an art collector.)
This image was honored as a FEATURE

THANK YOU
The “Great Expectations” Series highlights a theme that runs through my work : The fraught process of selection we—each of us-- face daily—and a choice to look for metaphor, amazing narratives, and pure possibility in what is around us.
Theme and Symbolism: : In this paintography piece, the juxtaposition of color with changing light symbolizes positive change through envisioning different perspectives. Here is the story of the creative heart on a journey of awakening and compassion. This is a theme that runs through what I paint on canvas, or on paper, or in a digital way.
Method:: Abstract –Expressionism-Narrative Digital Paintography. Interpretations of outer/inner landscapes with a persistent focus on patterns and bold or unusual color. Photo and digital manipulation not necessarily an accurate interpretation, but instead seeking to explore the essence of the subject by moving into shapes, colors, forms, textures, layering and the overall gestalt to achieve an effect. Glimpses of reality from unusual perspectives. Image-making prompted by nature.
Story: : I create visual narratives from what is around me- make sketches into canvas work, then take a photo creating a mixed media digital rendering such as what you see in this piece. I reach out for the story and metaphor in a visual narrative via texture, patterns, repetition that meet in a feeling of lyrical abstraction. These elements offer a sense of coming together - a collection of concepts and forms that take shape.
** This artwork is available in a variety of framed and unframed gallery-quality prints, home décor items such soft and durable duvet covers, fabric shower curtains, and throw pillows as well as greeting cards and weekender totes.
