Description
“Iris of the Spring Equinox”
“Iris of the Spring Equinox” began as a watercolor image inspired by a photo of an iris blooming in my garden here in my studio in Asheville, North Carolina. Later, I again photographed the image, and translated the resulting collage via digital rendering, digitally painting added abstract photo-art elements.

This is a abstract paintography piece... contemporary art continuing the thread of interest in nature that runs through what I paint on canvas, or on paper, or in a digital way. The visual story emphasizes the fraught process of selection we—each of us-- face every day—that being the choice to look for beauty and possibility in what is around us.
Theme and Symbolism: : As an artist-storyteller I love the idea of expressing and honoring the power of nature. I chose soft purple tones and broad strokes to create a visual impression of mystery and expectation. I used the soft mauve to purple palette to represent strength and historic longevity despite the delicate nature of the petals of this perennial beauty. I wanted to create a soft and inviting visual impression. There is the symbol of the flower in full-bloom representing generosity and loving kindness ... a crossing into nonlocal space ... another place... another understanding. Additionally, the juxtaposition of color with changing light symbolizes positive change through envisioning what is possible.
Story and Method: : I create from what is around me. I translate photos into mixed media often abstract expressionist digital renderings such as you see in this piece. I reach out for the story or metaphor to share in a narrative via texture, patterns, repetition that meet in the feeling of collage.
This piece creates its narrative via texture, patterns, repetition, and "post-painterly-abstraction fauve-wave" bits that meet in the feeling of an integrated collection of concepts and forms... with a feeling of collage.
