It began as a canvas I painted one late night here in my studio here in Asheville, North Carolina. This contemporary paintography art continues the thread of interest in the delightful connections in nightlife.. ..

Theme and Symbolism: : #RBG wrote in dissent that throwing out voting rights laws because they were working was “like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet.

In this paintography piece, the juxtaposition of deep blue to midnight blue hues- in contrast to the orange moon - symbolizes polarities.

Many new understandings and relationships may arrive in an evening meant for connection. Positive change through envisioning different perspectives is possible through the very human longing for connection . Soon, a tale of change with compassion may find its way into ones life.

Story and Method: The quality of light seems to change after midnight when “la vie nocturne- (night life)- makes an appearance as if on a painting created on blue velvet. In fact, there are those who say that this very light lends itself to an aura of magic and mystery. What happens in the wee hours that transcends the ordinary? This series explores that question. It is dedicated to the sensory perceptions of the night.

Here you may notice layers and more layers, and overlays in a photo-montage. Many observers enjoy how color separates itself from its usual representational and realistic perspective against a backdrop of darkest blues-to-black.. In this canvas I wanted spontaneity- bold brushstrokes and/or colors to elicit emotional meaning as the elements come together and emerge. The character of the subject seems more “touchable” against that backdrop.


“La Vie Nocturne“- (night life)- makes an appearance as if on a painting created on blue velvet. Working out a mixed medium/ photo-montage technique that you see in this with textures and layering for the effect unfolds in this composition via a juxtaposition of color. The viewer may be intrigued with emotional meaning as it emerges or respond to a connection to the essential character of the subject that seems more “touchable” against this backdrop...a message of change with compassion. This piece creates its narrative via texture, patterns, repetition with references to "lyrical abstraction.” These elements meet to offer a feeling of coming together as the collection of concepts and forms take shape.
