"WOKE": About that awakening, Carl Jung, whose work inspired this series wrote, “One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious ...wholeness is not achieved by cutting off a portion of one’s being, but by integration of the contraries.”

This image is symbolic of individuation, or the journey out of the cross shadows into “becoming who one is.” Jung believed that it is the end purpose of human life to experience wholeness. “The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are,” he wrote.

Here, the fullest expression of your character can take root and hold firmly. Then you, as an individual- represented here as the vessel at the center of the image- can stand out against an imposing backdrop as seen in this image. That very setting could interfere with the your perception unless you are awake to the shadows and darkness.

“The highest, most decisive experience is to be alone with one’s own self, “ Jung wrote, “ You must be alone to find out what supports you, when you find that you can not support yourself. Only this experience can give you an indestructible foundation.”

The gradations from black to white as well as the saturated colors in this image- along with the symbolic single vessel found at the window of opportunity there holding a bouquet of joie de vivre- represent the fullness of awakening to pure potential.


“What if I should discover that the poorest of the beggars and the most impudent of offenders are all within me; and that I stand in need of the alms of my own kindness, that I, myself, am the enemy who must be loved — what then?”






BEHIND THE SCENES :: I hope you will find a connection here - linger awhile, possibly start a conversation about the elements - spaces, lines, textures and rhythms or themes that speak to you. As we - each of us- (and also as a collection of living creatures) - face the fraught process of selection every day- may we find what is positive and possible.
In creating my visual narratives, exploring any number of alternative techniques, I hope to achieve a shared sense with YOU—one of being “in the moment.” That is why often, I look to simple images and pull from what is around me : I take sketches on to canvas, take a photo of it and make a mixed media digital rendering. Or I may just use my mouse (computer, that is) to “paint” a piece solely on a blank screen ( Aether Art.)
