“ Lungta the Windhorse”


LUNGTA is contemporary digital art derived at first from a photo I took of a horse. This is a digital rendering from my photo- paintography as created in my studio in Asheville, North Carolina USA.

Method: I began with a very simple line drawing - minimalist with a pastel reference. From there I added bold strokes and the intensity of black and white graphics. Next came the unusual colors and broad brush strokes of Fauvism. Moving from geometric abstract artwork to bold colors and more evident brush strokes, as I do in all my paintings, I really wanted to create a lasting visual impression.

Story and Symbolism: There are five images in the WINDHORSE series – from its emergence to collaboration- depict strength and resilience and a growing spirit fueling change with compassion- a contemporary reflection of the ancient Tibetan practice of flying prayer flags inscribed with Lungta.

Long before there were trains and planes, the horse was the fastest way for people to get around- thus the horse depicted swift action and a very personal ability to boost vitality on many levels- a positive force for fortuitous experiences that come easily, along with good fortune, and many blessings.

Windhorse is a visual metaphor.“The unlimited energy of basic goodness and inherent wakefulness” - (as represented in this prayer flag image) - beckon increasing energy, joy and delight. This piece creates its narrative via texture, patterns, repetition, and abstract expressionist to fauve-wave bits that meet in the feeling of an integrated collection of concepts and forms..
