Description

Lungta the WIndhorse of MUSTANG reminds me of the old Bob Seger song, "Still Running Against the WInd."

The mixed media collage image of the wild horse now in a stall came from a photo I captured of a mighty horse in the mountains of North Carolina to become digital paintography.

This image is No.5 in a series of increasing visual impact and emotion. I began with a very simple line drawing - minimalist with a pastel reference. From there I added bold strokes and the intensity of black and white graphics.

Next came the unusual colors and broad brush strokes of Fauvism. Moving from geometric abstract artwork to bold colors and more evident brush strokes, as I do in all my paintings, I really wanted to create a lasting visual impression.

THEME AND SYMBOLISM:: In this paintography piece, the juxtaposition of color with changing light symbolizes positive change through envisioning creative perspectives. Here the story of longing for connection highlights an impetus for change with compassion. This is a theme that runs through what I paint on canvas, or on paper, or in a digital way.

BACK-STORY: : I create visual narratives from what is around me- make sketches into canvas work, then take a photo creating a mixed media digital rendering such as what you see in this piece. I reach out for the story and metaphor in a visual narrative via texture, patterns, repetition that meet in a feeling of lyrical abstraction. These elements offer a sense of coming together - a collection of concepts and forms that take shape.

METHOD:: Modern Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Narrative, and Digital Paintography with a Twist. Look for interpretations of outer/inner landscapes with a persistent focus on patterns and bold or unusual color. Photo and digital manipulation mostly NOT an accurate interpretation, seek to explore the essence of the subject. I move shapes, colors, forms, textures, layering and the overall gestalt to achieve an effect. Expect glimpses of reality from unusual perspectives. Image-making prompted by nature.
