“Many Blessings Prayer Flags and Green Mountains”


Original photography of beautiful flags created by local artists and displayed as they flew in the wind at The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. The photo I took soon turned to post-painterly abstract expressionist paintography art as photos often do when inspired by the thread of interest that runs through what I paint on canvas, or on paper, or in a digital way— the compelling experience of everyday wonders in nature.

Symbolism: Transparency. The visual story showing a multitude of flags boldly colored and displayed emphasizes The Fraught Process of Selection we, each of us, each face every day—and the seeing into clarity within those choices. This is a piece I have in my own studio. It reminds me to be as free as the wind. And yet, it tells me to be as dependable at the strands of color representing strength along the way.

In this paintography piece, the juxtaposition of color with changing light symbolizes positive change through envisioning different perspectives. Each of the images in this series bases its tale on the concept of Change with Compassion.

How It Was Created: I create from what is around me sometimes turning to the “ inner landscape muse” after a photo shoot. I translate photos into mixed media format utilizing software and reach out for the story or metaphor with digital manipulation. This piece creates its narrative via texture, patterns, repetition, and "post-painterly-abstraction fauve-wave" bits that meet in the feeling of collage. (A completed digital collage image , unlike those in which I am moving more into photo-manipulation and/or paintography, seeks to be somewhat obvious in terms of the pasting of image sections together. )

This image arrived almost magically one night. I had been working on how to portray a symbol of transparency and how important that is - on many levels- when this piece of digital paintography evolved. It has begun as a photo. Now it took on another life.
