“Spirit of Santa Fe” is a digital rendering from a plein air sketch to original canvas that then was photographed at my studio in Asheville, North Carolina. Here it is as contemporary paintography.


Theme and Symbolism: "Warmth of the Sun"--In this paintography piece, the juxtaposition of the rich colors of the American Southwest and high desert symbolizes pure potential. There must be positive change on the horizon. The idea is - that through the vigilant eyes of the artist in each of us- that very observation of and care for the things around us can lead to mindfulness and compassion for all... .

Story and Method: Only a few visitors were around when I found myself at a very old adobe structure in New Mexico. Magic seemed to be in the air – voices from the past. Later, I tried to capture the sense of place in this image as done from a bold and delighted perspective.

I create from what is around me. I translate photos into mixed media often abstract expressionist digital renderings such as you see in this piece. I reach out for the story or metaphor to share in a narrative via texture, patterns, repetition that meet in the feeling of collage.

This piece creates its narrative via texture, patterns, repetition, and abstraction with Fauve bits that meet in the feeling of an integrated collection of concepts and forms/
