Description
“Tree Dancing on the Edge”
Original photography of a tree barely holding on to the mountainside on a cold day as seen from the artist’s studio in Asheville, North Carolina. The tree with its accompanying goddess yard art (a gift from an artist friend) was then turned to contemporary paintography.
After ink work I added to a pen-and ink sketch, it took shape on canvas –(acrylic)- later to be photographed once more. At that point, it evolved into modern contemporary -(new mixed media-) paintography. When I took a photo of the canvas and subjected it to the whims of my muse-(and computer)- in my studio in Asheville, North Carolina the result was this digital rendering.
It continues a theme that runs through my images: Nature, metaphor, love, friendship, collaboration, and consideration of the fraught process of selection we—each of us— face daily: to embrace nature and her promise. I used cool hues of mauve and pink to represent the delicate nature of life, and its strength even in a sea of difficulty.

THANK YOU
Symbolism:The tree, a Symbol of Courage in this digital painting represents a moment of realization of our own vulnerability. It explores a feeling- possibly “dancing on the edge” of the winter of your spirit.
I relied on a photo I took of an old poplar tree that lives exactly on the edge of the cliff next to my studio. Then I added those expressive colors to define the emotion of that moment. There are patterns and shadows and deepening expanses that may evoke a thoughtful mood. I recalled these words from Ansel Adams, “With all art expression, when something is seen, it is a vivid experience, sudden, compelling, and inevitable.”
Here is how I tell the story too often confronted in today’s challenging world where even innocent children experience “dancing on the edge.” Poets, artists and sensitive souls may see symbolic references to suicide prevention, or find other metaphors here . In any case, the story of love of life is told.
* This artwork is available in a variety of framed and unframed gallery-quality prints, home décor items such soft and durable duvet covers, fabric shower curtains, and throw pillows as well as greeting cards and weekender totes.
