Description
“Wallflower or Ballet Dancer” -- Series No. 2
“Wallflower or Ballet Dancer,” an abstract expressionist / figurative abstraction piece, was inspired by Elton John’s, “Tiny Dancer” in combination with a photo I took of a wildflower near my studio which I then digitally rendered ! It is one of a series—variations on a theme. It came to life here in my studio in Asheville, North Carolina.
This also is narrative art in the new media mixed media format – (such as combinations of pencil, ink, paint, photo work and textured applications.) It unfolds in a “collage” of color and texture. Whether on paper, canvas, or as a digital rendering, the result is a story told within the framework of contemporary mixed media art.

The entire “Wallflower or Ballet Dancer” series portrays the secret heart of a once-upon-a-time person-sans-partner. However, on closer look, anyone who cares to inspect the details may discover a lively dancer in disguise. Here you are invited to add your own interpretation to the story.
Certainly, the “Wallflower or Ballet Dancer” series celebrates nature. And there’s a nod to one of my favorite poets, Emily Dickinson, who wrote, “I dwell in possibility." The “Wallflower or Ballet Dancer” series takes her verse and that of Elton John to bring forward a pop of color “dancing” into your living spaces.
The “Wallflower or Ballet Dancer” series continues a theme that runs through my work -- nature, metaphor, and the fraught process of selection we—each of us— face daily : The choice to look for pure possibility in what is around us. This image highlights the power of a deeper look in search of compassion. Possibly, it will be just the image that feels right to share or bring home.

ZSANAN STUDIO NOTES:: I hope you will find a connection here - linger awhile, possibly start a conversation about the elements - spaces, lines, textures and rhythms or themes that speak to you. As we - each of us- (and also as a collection of living creatures) - face the fraught process of selection every day- may we find what is positive and possible.
Please do look for interpretations of outer/inner landscapes with a persistent focus on patterns and bold or unusual color. Photo and digital manipulation mostly NOT an accurate interpretation, seek to explore the essence of the subject - shapes, colors, forms, textures, layering and the overall gestalt – for an effect. Expect glimpses of reality from unusual perspectives and image-making prompted by nature.
ZSANAN STUDIO PHILOSOPHY: “NOT AN IMAGE BUT AN EXPERIENCE”--
As we - each of us- (and as a collection of living creatures) - face the fraught process of selection every day- may we find what is positive and possible.
"Perception is everything in art. The artist goal is to influence the viewer to see the world as the artist does. This can change the viewers mood, their mind, their outlook - even if only for a limited time." Lutz Baar
SYMBOLISM:: In this paintography piece, the juxtaposition of color with changing light symbolizes positive change through envisioning creative perspectives. Here the story of longing for connection highlights an impetus for change with compassion.
METHOD:: I create visual narratives from what is around me- make sketches into canvas work, then take a photo creating a mixed media digital rendering such as what you see in this piece. I reach out for the story and metaphor via texture, patterns, repetition - a feeling of lyrical abstraction of elements offering a sense of collaboration - a collection of concepts and forms taking shape.
BEHIND THE SCENES: When you visit my website or studio in Asheville, North Carolina – you may discover that I love to tell stories- visual stories, that is. My narrative art, in mixed media – (pencil, ink, paint, photo work and textured applications) – often unfolds as a collage. I delight in putting an emphasis not only on color and texture, but on - *hidden surprises! Whether on paper, canvas, or as a digital rendering --the purpose, the raison d'être -- is to celebrate life.
