"Winter Solstice No. 1"


Original photography of a tree dancing in delight at the dawn moon of the winter solstice. The photo was taken at dawn as I looked out across the woods at the mountainside. Later, it inspired a pen and ink drawing. This then became a watercolor piece. Finally, it was turned to contemporary paintography. All this via the thread of interest that runs through what I paint on canvas, or on paper, or in a digital way—trees, friendship courage, and especially nature and her promise.

Theme and Symbolism: The tree, a symbol of celebration in this digital painting may, is also representative of the moment of realization of vulnerability. It explores a feeling- possibly “dancing on the edge” of the winter of spirit. Here is how I tell the story of the challenge of contemporary climate issues where we can experience “dancing on the edge.” This visual story emphasizes the very fraught process of selection we –each of us face-- every day-- that is to stand for positive outcomes.

Story and Method: I relied on a photo I took of an old poplar tree that lives exactly on the edge of the cliff next to my studio. Then I added those expressive colors to define the emotion of that moment. I used wintry blues and yellows to represent the delicate nature of life on Earth.

There are patterns and shadows and deepening expanses that may evoke a thoughtful mood. I recalled these words from Ansel Adams, “With all art expression, when something is seen, it is a vivid experience, sudden, compelling, and inevitable.”
