“Sailing with Pythagoras ” No. 6

From my oil pastel comes this post-painterly abstract piece. It was photographed and digitally-rendered here in my studio in Asheville, North Carolina. Despite the Geometric Shapes/ Triangles, the image seems to retain an "organic' feel. The original pastel turned to photography of sailboats viewed from the shore of the San Juan Islands and Friday Harbor, Washington State- reminds me of a certain sense of joie d e vivre.

Theme and Symbolism: : It is said that triangles reveal concepts of past, present, and future or spirit, mind, and body with point-up triangles representing a strong foundation or stability or male energy and point-down triangles welcoming into the world or female energy.
In this paintography piece, the juxtaposition of color with changing light symbolizes the story of longing for connection .

Story and Method: : While celebrating the life of my dearest friend who loved nothing more than sailing, I hit upon the idea of expressing the Pythagorean Theorem in terms of sail design and, in particular, presenting a visual image of how the shape of sails affects their movement—a basic postulate of right triangle trigonometry.

Here, I reach out for the story or metaphor to share in a narrative via texture, patterns, repetition that meet in the feeling of something beyond the apparent.
