ASHEVILLE- BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN MOON RISE
the cliffs that "speak of vanishing time" ~ Billy Collins
I am here in my studio in Asheville, North Carolina-- where the sentinel peaks of The Blue Ridge Mountains " speak of vanishing time"--and overlook the confluence of the French Broad river (racing north) and the Swannanoa (flowing west) -- feeling inspired.
The clouds surround the studio this early morning. The temperate rainforest is speaking--calling me to walk the trails, travel the mountain coves, follow those rivers to creeks and waterfalls and stretch up to where the tall hemlocks live--and share the images nature provides.
Hope this brings you a sense of joie de vivre .
Here, from one of my canvases (acrylic)- I borrow bits --then, from a photo I took of one Asheville scene converted on canvas (accentuated with ink) I create a mixed media collage.
Another photo of that collage then cameto Photoshop for digital manipulations (100s of layers) and rendering.
IF you imagine it, you may notice, sculpted into the mountanside, the profile shadow of a Cherokee elder instilled there.
Here is lyrical abstraction-- a fusion-collage-- simultaneously sparse and exciting. It is my effort to visually narrate the point where logic meets emotion. In that place, change with compassion can happen.
THEME:: Landscapes
Landscapes (inner and outer) offer the opportunity to bring together slices of my original art in a collage, digitally-rendered. Blended elements, both abstract and organic, become a “fusion” lyrically abstracted and ripe for story telling.
In this case, the narrative is about facing challenges-- a visual metaphor for life as we know it. It symbolizes engagement and possible joie de vivre.
MEDIA:: Again, this is an example of my process: Sketch for composition to canvas and/or paper, sometimes, oil pastels, sometimes acrylic paint. The result then captured as a photo and brought to create a JPEG. Finally, digital layering of the original materials.
Objective:: Narrative art with emotive content- that offers an opportunity for the viewer to interpret the story being told, and thus add to the story. (Some are inner landscapes.) Whether as a digital abstractionist, working as well on canvas and with photography to produce mixed media images, my hope is to engage the viewer.
Symbolism :: Ever a sense of joy of life, transitions, new perceptions that evoke positive change, the embracing of an inner - symbolic-mythic- visual landscape that can reveal how disparate parts work together when visual impressions, founded on simple or more complex designs, build on a promising tale of life on Earth.
