“Cat Nap- Chasing the Light”
“Cat Nap- Chasing the Light” arrived with purrs. This piece began as a photo of the two adopted (rescued) cats of a dear friend who is active in animal welfare. As viewed from my studio in Asheville, North Carolina, it then became a pen and ink -to a watercolor drawing and a miniature acrylic on canvas. Photographed again , it has turned to contemporary digital art!
Theme and Symbolism: I used vivid neutral to black and white in this piece to symbolize being at rest, at home- where peace, comfort and security and all things good are possible- thus “chasing the light.” Expressed here is the longing for a deep breath of fresh air we all can find nurturing. The subtle changing light symbolizes positive change through choosing new perspectives.

Story and Method: : Via the thread of interest in animal welfare that runs through what I paint on canvas, or on paper, or in a digital way, “Cat Nap-Chasing the Light” became one in my “Cats make Sense” series about facing challenges, renewal and caring. I create from what is around me. I translate photos into mixed media often abstract expressionist digital renderings such as you see in this piece. I reach out for the story or metaphor to share in a narrative via texture, patterns, repetition that meet in the feeling of collage.
This piece creates its narrative via texture, patterns, repetition, and "post-painterly-abstraction fauve-wave" bits that meet in the feeling of an integrated collection of concepts and forms... with a feeling of collage.
