Description
Love Your Mother
“Love Your Mother” is an abstract expressionist piece. It tells a story, and asks you the viewer, to apply your own narrative and/or interpretation to the visual image. It had a simple beginning as a photo I took one late afternoon – the mountain scene to the east of my studio here in Asheville, North Carolina.
It and was inspired by Wendell Berry who wrote,
“ The Earth is what we all have in common.”
“Love Your Mother” took shape as an acrylic on canvas I painted for Earth Day. Later it took on a form known as “ photo-art” when I photographed the canvas and its photo was subjected to my imagination and computer. The result was the digital rendering you see here. It continues a theme that runs through my work : Nature, metaphor, and the fraught process of selection we—each of us— face daily : The choice to look for pure possibility in what is around us.

Thank you.
Theme and Symbolism: : In “Love Your Mother,” the juxtaposition of dark space, painted moon against the photo image represents contemporaneous beauty and the fragility. That combination calls for awareness of our shared experience on Mother Earth and for envisioning novel perspectives...a longing for connection a tale of change with compassion. This is a theme that runs through what I paint on canvas, or on paper, or in a digital way.
Method:: Abstract –Expressionism-Narrative Digital Paintography. Interpretations of outer/inner landscapes with a persistent focus on patterns and bold or unusual color. Photo and digital manipulation not necessarily an accurate interpretation, but instead seeking to explore the essence of the subject by moving into shapes, colors, forms, textures, layering and the overall gestalt to achieve an effect. Glimpses of reality from unusual perspectives. Image-making prompted by nature.
Story: : I create visual narratives from what is around me- make sketches into canvas work, then take a photo creating a mixed media digital rendering such as what you see in this piece. I reach out for the story and metaphor in a visual narrative via texture, patterns, repetition that meet in a feeling of lyrical abstraction. These elements offer a sense of coming together - a collection of concepts and forms that take shape.
